2008 ALBUM REVIEWS ; Tha Carter III

If you tuned in to Red Scare for my first episode you caught my countdown of 2008's best tracks.
They included the following albums which I will be reviewing on this blog ; Portishead's Third, Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago, and Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III . These are not necessarily my favorite albums of the year, although their tracks did place well on my countdown, but simply albums which I have alot to say about and want other people to listen to.

Tha Carter III (Lil Wayne)

For those of you who know me well, you know there is a soft spot in my heart for sick rhymes. At first I was weary of this album, especially after hearing "Lollipop" the #1 single which uses about 700 % too much vocoder and features such creative lines as "like a refund I make her bring that ass back" and "shawty wanna lick me like a lollipop"(popular with creepy Abercrombie-decked club- lurking 40 year olds the world over). BUT THEN I heard a hypnotic little ditty called "A Milli", sporting some of the illest, weirdest rhymes since Ludacris's Chicken-N-Beer, and a throbbing hook that I couldn't get out of my head, and I knew I was in love. Then came my obsession with "Mrs. Officer", Lil Wayne's ode to hot female cops using some of the sassiest rapping ever over a funky club beat (note worthy lines include "all she want me to do is fuck tha police" and "I said lady whats your number/ she said 911") . Other favorites are "3 Peat" and "Got Money". So I will ignore for now that this album was a huge mainstream hit with gay college students and slutty tweens and say that this is a real underground-esque hip hop jewel.
